10 Instagrammable locations in Munich

The beautiful city of Munich is located in southern Germany and is the capital of the historic county of Bavaria. It’s famous for its stunning architecture, beer halls and of course Oktoberfest! While you’re there check out these 10 Instagrammable locations to share with your followers!

1. Marienplatz

Early morning at the Marienplatz

The Marienplatz is at the heart of Munich and the most popular place in the city. The incredible New Town Hall is an imposing building with some unbelievably detailed gothic architecture. Arrive early in the morning for the perfect Instagram shot with the whole square all to yourself 😍

Beautiful Munich architecture

The New Town Hall was completed in 1874 and its tower rises 85m high above the city. The tower also houses the infamous Glockenspiel which runs at 11am and 12pm daily (and at 5pm as well during March to October).

2. St Anna im Lehel

Behind the church of St Anna im Lehel

This is one of those spots that we found just strolling the streets. We were on the way to the English Garden following our phone maps and it took us past this church. I had to stop and get this photo and my hat ended up so perfect! It’s the back of the parish Church of St Anna and the old style lamppost alongside the green of the roof tower make an enticing corner scene.

3. Residenz

Munich Residenz

Munich Residenz is one of the places on everyone’s list of things to do in Munich. It’s a great place to soak up Bavarian history as the Residenz was the former Royal Palace and also the location of the government for Bavarian nobility. The Antiquarium is the best spot inside the sprawling palace complex as its length makes for a focal point in amongst the beautiful tiles and decoration of the room as well as the lovely soft lighting that gives golden tones. The whole space is an exquisite work of art.

4. Alter Peter

There is one viewpoint in Munich you can’t miss and that’s from the top of the St Peter’s Church tower. Climb the 299 steps for a birds eye view of the city. This location is perfect for an Instagram shot of the Marienplatz with the massive Frauenkirche standing out above the rooftops and the whole facade of the Neues Rathaus on show to see all of its impeccable detail.

5. Platzl

Platzl

Platzl is a quiet corner of Munich’s city centre and it’s stunning with so many different angles to capture. My favourite is this one facing towards the Orlando Haus, especially in the morning when the light is still soft!

Right beside Hofbräuhaus

A trip to Munich isn’t complete without a trip to the beer hall at Hofbräuhaus which obvs you have to document on your Insta Story 😉 Even when it’s not a touristy season it’s a raucous affair with lots of merriment and German oompah music!

6. Government building – Maximilianstraße

Again this is another location that I was not necessarily seeking out but the incredible architecture made me stop and pull the camera out. This is a government building but it’s the delicate details and intricate design of the arches and the building that makes this a great Insta location.

7. Chinese Theatre

The English Garden is a wonderful place to walk in Munich and enjoy some peace and quiet as well as some greenery even in the middle of the city. The best Instagram location in the park is the Chinese Theatre which is right by the beer garden (a great place to grab a pint). It’s bright yellow colour and symmetry align for a great shot.

8. Max Joseph Platz

At Max Joseph Platz you can find the Bavarian State Opera but these beautiful buildings are opposite! The pastel facades are very classic Instagram worthy for a splash of colour.

9. Olympiapark

Take a trip out of the city on the underground to Olympiazentrum where you will find the Olympic Park and Stadium from 1972 when Munich hosted the Summer Games. It’s a great place to stretch your legs and admire some great views but the most Instagrammmable spot in the park is at the lake with a view to the Olympiaturm with its imposing structure reflected in the water!

10. Hotel Opera

We passed the stunning facade of Hotel Opera on the way to the English Garden and it’s and IGers dream 🥰 it’s so elegant with gorgeous lights and plants outside with the wonderful black and white design!
